Egham, Magna Carta country.
A university town beside Runnymede meadow, where the Magna Carta was sealed in 1215 — with Virginia Water, Wentworth and fast London trains on its doorstep.
History, learning and the river meadow
Egham's claim to history is hard to beat: the Magna Carta was sealed on Runnymede meadow in 1215, just outside town. Today it's a lively university town — Royal Holloway's gothic Founder's Building is one of the most striking in the South East — with a good spread of shops, pubs and restaurants, Strode's College, and the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial above Englefield Green looking out over Windsor and London.
The Royal estate of Virginia Water and Wentworth — home of European PGA golf — are a short drive, sport runs from the football and cricket clubs to fencing and rowing, and the Egham Royal Show each August keeps the town's agricultural roots alive. Trains run from Egham station on the Waterloo–Reading line, with Heathrow and the M25 minutes away.
